Winter Ale by Summit Brewing Company
A Winter Warmer in November? Even know it is still fall…this just seemed appropriate for the nasty weather day we are having today…and what is that Winter Warmer I speak of? Why it is beer #359, Winter Ale by Summit Brewing Company from St. Paul, Minnesota. This beer is brewed in the style of a Winter Warmer as I alluded to before and has an ABV of 6.1%.
Into my pint glass went this very dark liquid…dark brown…possibly black in color. The head was pretty much non-existent. I took a smell…lots of chocolate and an earthy, nutty aroma greeted the nose. So far so good so I took a taste. It had some decent roasted malt flavors up front with chocolate, a bit of dark fruit raisin like thing and some brown sugar. Towards the back end it was coffee mixed with cocoa and that cocoa went on into the aftertaste. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, and highly drinkable was this yummy brew.
I liked this quite a bit though at times I thought of this more as a Porter but it still was nice and tasty. I’m not sure how this could keep one warm in the winter, I would think the ABV would have to be jacked up fairly high for that.

India Style Rye Ale by Summit Brewing Company
I hopped on the trail after work for an 8 mile quick ride, that is just about all I can get with the daylight being so short this time of the year. This is one of the nicest times of the year to ride with the cooler temps and that raw feeling of late autumn still a few weeks away.
I popped open beer #323 after said ride, India Style Rye Ale by Summit Brewing Company, and I was truly surprised that this far into it I have come upon a style of beer I have yet to have. Summit, from St. Paul, Minnesota, brews this in the style of a Rye Beer. Rye Beer is just that, beer brewed with rye, the grain that is.
Appearance – Dark brown color with a tiny off-white head.
Nose – Smelled like rye bread…crust and all. There was also a bit of pine and caramel.
Taste – Well…it did taste a bit like rye bread, there was no mistaking that. The hops are pretty noticeable with a pine like flavor. It was very earthy tasting and even had a bit of a nuttiness to it. The rye bread flavor also lasts on into the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel – Medium bodied, with an ample amount of prickly carbonation. It had a decent bitter bite to it also.
Overall – For my first Rye Beer, I thought this was pretty good.

Horizon Red Ale by Summit Brewing Company
House is again full of workers doing their thing making our new hardwood floors look awesome. I have to say…I don’t know how anyone couldn’t love hardwood floors. IMHO…such much nicer than the nicest carpet and even better looking knowing that the wood used is from the rarest of tress in the rain forest. Kidding of course about the rare wood and the rain forest…not about how nice the floors look.
Anyways…on to beer #165. Horizon Red Ale by Summit Brewing Company from St. Paul, Minnesota. This American Amber or Red Ale has an ABV of 5.7%.
The pour showed a nice amber colored brew with white head that produced some nice lacing. The nose was caramel malts and bit of pine from the hops. The hops were up first in the taste with an orange peel like flavor and bitterness. The caramel malts followed that with a very slight sweetness. Oddly enough…there was a bit more hop (more of that orange peel) flavors after the malts to finish out the mouthful. It had a medium body with quite a bit of carbonation. Fairly drinkable for me…I’m not a huge fan of Red or Amber Ales.
This was decent…nothing spectacular. There was a bit more hoppier presence than I anticipated. For me…it was an average beer.
