Hex by Magic Hat Brewing Company

What a difference a day makes weather wise.  Summer like temps yesterday, fall like today (and for the next 3 days).

Beer #291 (slowly approaching that magic 300 mark) is Hex by Magic Hat Brewing Company.  Brewed in South Burlington, Vermont, this American Amber Ale or Red Ale has an ABV of 5.4 %.  I liked the label on this one with some witches and other spooky creatures sitting around drinking Magic Hat’s Ourtoberfest (I guess their play on Oktoberfest).

It started off on a good note with a nice amber color.  The head was…wait…there was no head.  I took a whiff…there was not much going on there.  It had a faint malt aroma.  I took a sip…very bread like in the taste…toast would be a good way to describe it.  There was a slight caramel sweetness from the malts.  There was also a bit of a pine like hop thing (flavor and bitterness) on the back end.  It had a medium body and was quite carbonated.

This was an OK brew…nothing special to see or taste here.  Let’s move on…shall we?

Blind Faith by Magic Hat Brewing Company

I really feel that the day after the Super Bowl should be a holiday.  I could have used an extra day to recover from Sunday.  I ate way too much food and drank way too much beer.  Such is the life of a King.  Oh yeah…congrats to the Green Bay Packers.  My Dallas Cowboys will be coming after you next year!

Beer #71 is Blind Faith by Magic Hat Brewing Company.  This English India Pale Ale has an ABV of 6.20% and a notch on the label indicating best served before October 2010.

It poured a cloudy orange amber color with a huge fluffy white head.  The aroma was very muted with citrus coming through most.  I also noticed a definite barley or grain like smell from the malts.  The taste consisted mostly of that bitter hoppy orange flavor.  It had a decent bitter bite at the end.  The mouthfeel was a bit on the thin side and the carbonation was on the weak side.  This was fairly drinkable with the alcohol not noticeable, the bitterness fairly low, and no off flavors.

I thought it was an average beer.  I wonder if this was just a bit too old as it was 4 months past what Magic Hat considers best served by.  Or maybe my taste buds are just too tired from yesterdays over indulgence of food and drink.  Either way, I’m not not quite sure I would get this again.
